PrototypeFor pediatric speech-language pathologists building multi-source communication evaluations

Shiona

An accessible evaluation workspace for SLPs. Shiona helps clinicians build multi-source pediatric communication evaluations and turn clinician-verified observations into a transparent communication evidence profile. Evaluation that adapts to the child—not the other way around.

Every Habib Labs product is created research-first, with an evidence-based approach.

Shiona interface

Standard evaluation workflows can miss access and language context

Pediatric communication evaluations often need to account for multilingual homes, AAC, sensory access, and uneven participation. Rigid single-instrument workflows can under-represent what a child can actually show when the conditions are fair.

A clinician-controlled evidence workspace

Shiona guides clinicians from evaluation question through access and language context, an evidence map, accessible evidence collection, clinician verification, and a communication evidence profile. It is a local demo prototype with synthetic data only. It is not a therapy session tool, caseload manager, EHR, standardized-test publisher, or AI diagnostician.

Assessments & stimuli

Access and language context

Language & Communication Context Interview

Structured interview protocol capturing home languages, access needs, and communication contexts before evidence collection.

Stimulus examples

  • Context first. Establish languages, modalities, and access needs before interpreting performance.

Unvalidated prototype protocol. Does not diagnose or determine eligibility.

Descriptive narrative sampling

Story Sample

Narrative sampling protocol for collecting communication evidence under defined conditions.

Stimulus examples

  • Narrative sample. Collect story-based communication evidence for clinician review.

Prototype sampling protocol only. Not a published standardized test.

Probe–teach–retest–transfer

Learning Potential Lab

Dynamic assessment-style probes that keep clinician judgment central to interpretation.

Stimulus examples

  • Probe and teach. Observe how a child responds across guided learning opportunities.

Does not output disorder probability or eligibility decisions.

Early and multimodal communication

Early & Multimodal Communication Observation

Observation protocol for early and multimodal communication evidence.

Stimulus examples

  • Multimodal evidence. Capture gesture, vocalization, AAC, and other modalities with clinician verification.

Observation support only. Not diagnostic.

Clinician-entered external findings

External Evidence Record

Structured place for clinician-entered metadata and external findings that belong in the evidence map.

Stimulus examples

  • External record. Document external sources without treating them as automated conclusions.

Clinician-authored metadata only.

How it works

  1. 1

    Frame the evaluation question

Start from the clinical question rather than a fixed battery checklist.

  2. 2

    Capture access and language context

Document languages, modalities, and access needs that change how evidence should be interpreted.

  3. 3

    Build an evidence map

Plan which protocols and sources will answer the question under fair conditions.

  4. 4

    Collect and verify

Administer accessible protocols, then keep clinician verification before anything enters the profile.

  5. 5

    Communication evidence profile

Assemble clinician-confirmed observations into a transparent profile—not an automated diagnosis.

Capabilities

  • Multi-source evaluation design

Combine interview, narrative, dynamic probes, observation, and external records in one workspace.

  • Access-aware protocols

Built for multilingual, AAC, and access-needs cases where one-size administration fails.

  • Clinician verification gate

Unconfirmed drafts do not become clinical measures without clinician confirmation.

  • Local demo prototype

Electron / local demo with synthetic data. Not shipped for real patient records.

Can I use it with real patient data?
Not yet. The current build is a local demo prototype using synthetic data only. It does not claim HIPAA, COPPA, FERPA, or FDA compliance.
Is this a therapy or caseload app?
No. Shiona is not a therapy-session workflow, caseload manager, progress tracker, note generator, home-practice app, or EHR.
